Nordic Horse Necklace
Nordic Horse Necklace
Horses were a valuable part of Old Norse society. A list of horses is mentioned in several Norse cultural sources and Sleipnir, Odin’s horse, is one of the most common horse images when studying Norse mythology.
Beyond mythology, horses were an everyday part of Northern European life, although not everyone could afford to own and mange their upkeep; winters were long and harsh, meaning animals had to live indoors with ample food stock to keep them alive until spring. Horses were prized for both labor and for travel; one of the runes in the Elder Futhark, Ehwaz (ᛖ), symbolizes both the horse and the reciprocity needed to have a positive relationship with a traveling partner in life.
This nordic-themed horse design is inspired by the Norwegian Fjord Horse, a smaller but wonderfully strong breed of horse that would have been found in Old Norse societies. Horses were symbols of cooperation, freedom, intelligence and travel.
