In Norse mythology, the Sun (Sól) and the Moon (Máni) were considered to be both deities and celestial bodies. They were described as a sister and and brother, responsible for moving the physical sun and moon across the sky, and were the regulators of the day/night cycle.

Old Norse culture revered the moon and sun equally; Northern Europe experienced longer spans of darkness during winters due to its latitude on the Earth, and Norse culture was adept at navigating by the positions of the moon and the stars. The Norse year began at Midwinter, when the moon would have been at its brightest, making Máni and the moon’s phases the timekeeper of the year’s holidays and celebrations.
