The Devil is depicted as a Satyr - half man, half goat -  in reference to both the lustful mythological figure and the concept of the scapegoat. The two figures bound to the column appear to be held against their will, but their chains are actually ropes, and easily removed… if they so choose. This card represents the internal voice that blames external forces for internal decisions. The Devil symbolizes personal responsibility and overcoming fear.
