Old Norse society recognized bears as powerful animals capable of great strength but also deep familial bonds.

Norse warriors would wear bear skins into battle and model their ferocity on bears’ natural movements; these warriors were known as Berserkers and are the source of the modern word “berserk.”

But in addition to their prowess as natural predators, bears were revered by most Northern European cultures for their ability to survive harsh winters through hibernation and fierce defense of their cubs. These traits led to their status as symbols of protection, stamina, and family.
